If you are expecting then you are probably already thinking about designing your nursery. At this stage, you may not even know if you are having a boy or a girl so how do you go about planning for a nursery?
You might already have some ideas, such as a theme or color scheme for your nursery. This is a great start. Use these ideas to plan and you will find the process quite easy.
Firstly, choose a color scheme for your nursery. If you know what your baby's sex will be then you might already have an idea of the color. The obvious traditional colors of blue for boys and pink for girls are still favorites, but this is no longer standard. Some parents are quite happy to have a blue room for a girl for instance. Pastels are generally the accepted norm with colors ranging from lemon through to purple. Bolder colors are becoming more popular particularly for trims around skirting boards and the like.
The next step is to select the furniture that will be placed in the nursery. Nursery furniture will probably be one of the biggest expenses with the most important items being the baby crib and crib mattress. Other items include a baby changing table, a storage cupboard for clothes and other items, a book case to store toys and a rocker or lounging seat for when nursing your baby.
These are some of the other items you may need to think about purchasing for your nursery:
- Crib bedding
- Crib bumpers
- Stroller
- Furniture
- Diaper stacker
- Mobile
- Wall hanging
- Valances
- Ruffles
Nursery furniture should be planned well in advance to allow you time to choose carefully and to ensure that any custom-made furniture will be available in time for the birth.
Nursery furniture should be sturdy enough to last at least the first three years of your baby's life. Convertible furniture is a great option that can save you money. A convertible baby's crib will grow with your child, eventually turning into a full size bed.
The most important pieces of furniture for your nursery include the crib, baby changing table and storage dresser or chest. A rocker is also a nice added addition for nursing your baby. These will be the most expensive items you will purchase.
If you are purchasing a changing table, you might like to consider a dresser style design with storage underneath the changing pad to store diapers. This is particularly suitable for smaller rooms where space might be a problem and can eventually be used as a dresser when your baby outgrows diapers.
A hutch is an excellent all-round storage device for a nursery. A hutch can not only store baby clothes and other baby products but also is a great way of displaying the baby's toys and keeping things neat and tidy.
The nursery furniture that you choose should be functional, meet the necessary safety standards and be durable enough to last.
Remember that you will have nine months to plan so take your time and choose wisely. Your nursery should ultimately be a room that both you and your baby will enjoy.
