My son will be old enough to start kindergarten this year but I just don't know if he is ready. He doesn't show a lot of interest in learning about letters and numbers. He does know the alphabet song and can recognize letters but doesn't seem to want to take that any further.
Do I hold him back or send him?
That is going to have to be a decision you will have to make. Lots of parents wonder if their child is really ready for kindergarten or not.
I would worry more about attention spam and if they are socially ready. Also will they be one of the younger or older ones in the class.
If they are just barely old enough to start kindergarten then I think you need to think long and hard before sending them, but if the only concern you have is not sure if he wants to learn to read, etc. Then I wouldn't dwell on that so much. When he gets around other kids he will probably get into the learning to read projects.
I do think since they learn so much in kindergarten now days that children should now their alphabet, be able to recognize all the letters, and even be able to copy them before they go to kindergarten. Most kids are reading by the time they hit first grade.
