I am a firm believer in having your child where a helmet when riding their bike. I am really glad my son had one when we took off the training wheels, he took a couple of tumbles that could have hurt him without the helmet.
But my point is bicycle helmets are for riding bikes, rollerblading, etc. Make sure your child does not wear his helmet on the playground. The chin strap could get caught on something and then your child is at risk.
My oldest daughter often rides her bike to the playground at her school, (she doesn't have to cross a street and it is only 1/2 block), I walked down there one day and saw she was wearing her helmet while going down the slide. I didn't think too much about it till another parent pointed out that if the helmet caught on something it could strangle her. I guess something similar had happened to a relative of hers.
So I just wanted to pass this on to other parents, make your children take off their helmets when on the playground.
Thank you!! I read your post and it opened my eyes. My children sometimes leave their helmets on when they go play on our backyard playset and I didn't realize the danger.
To top it off my 4 year old thought if he wore a helmet he could do more dangerous things on the monkey bars and would still be safe.
