Skills for Kindergarten

I overheard some other parents talking about kindergarten and it seemed to me like they were of the opinion that kids shouldn't start kindergarten unless they knew and could write all their numbers and letters. I thought that was what kindergarten was all about.

It is what kindergarten is about to some extent. But you have to realize that most kids go to preschool or their parents have worked with them and they already know their alphabet and can recognize the letters.

They have advanced kindergarten so much that any child that does not already have a grasp for the letters will start out behind.

It is true, children are to know at least half of letter sounds and able to identify letters in kinder. Unfortunetly, back when we were in kinder thats what we went to school to learn. Now we must show and teach our kids phonics, numbers and blends or they will be concidered low. The schools test kinder at least 4 to 6 times a year. If your child knows all letters, sounds, counts to 50+, knows 20-25 sight words and can write first & last name and read 3 to 5 worded sentences, they should test to go to 1st grade and skip kinder.
