My neighbors have a swimming pool, it is not that big and above ground but they do not watch their children when they are in the backyard unless they are swimming.
I looked out the other day and they (the kids) were dragging the ladder over to the pool. By the time I got out there the 4 year old had fallen in and gotten caught in the pool cover, (yes it had a cover but those are not for safety they keep leaves and stuff out).
It turned out okay I was able to get him out safely but if I hadn't been looking out my window and saw what was going to happen it could have been really really bad.
So teach your children safety rules, enforce the rules, keep the ladder out of their reach, and watch them!! Children do not always follow the rules and a tragedy can occur.

I hate that parents don't watch their kids. We have a pool like that and our children are never outside without us watching them. It is too tempting.
We also had to put looks on our gates because it proved to be a temptation to one of the neighbor boys as well.
So you need to be aware of other swimming pools in the neighborhood too. Swimming pools draw kids to them and a tragedy can happen before you know it.
