First off the best thing to do of course is to avoid getting sunburned in the first place, but when you do get a sunburn there are quite a few things you can do to take the sting out of it. Remember though the sooner you treat it the more success you will have in getting some quick relief.
One thing to add first is there is a correlation between a bad childhood sunburn and future skin cancer. It is always best to make sure that your children use sunscreen to avoid sunburns and future problems.
One of the best things to use on a sunburn is aloe vera, either from a plant you have at home or in the form of aloe vera gel. Hospitals quite often use it for burn victims as well.
Another thing you can do is to increase your Vitamin-C intake. It will often make sunburns heal quicker.
Take a cool bath with 2/3 cup of baking soda mixed in.
The tannins in black tea will also often soothe a sunburn. Add 5 or 6 teabags into your tub and soak for about 20 minutes. If your sunburn is more localized you can steep some strong tea and after it has been refrigerated and cool apply it to the affected areas with a cotton ball.
Some people find relief with calendula creams and Vitamin-E creams.
Avoid petroleum jelly at all costs, it will only trap the heat into your skin and make it worse.

As you probably know, sunless tanning lotion has been around for years. Back when these lotions were young sunless tanners were limited to just a products offering very little color variety. Summer is the time of year people like to be tan. Some will spend hours baking in the sun to achieve that bronzed look, others will go to tanning salons; but both methods can be harmful to your health.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 90 percent of the 1 million plus new cases of skin cancer diagnosed this year will be traced to ultraviolet light (UV) exposure; and cancer isn't the only illness people who spend a lot of time in the sun or on tanning beds can get. Overexposure to harmful UV rays can also cause cataracts, immune system changes, wrinkles, and premature aging of the skin.
Sunscreen can slow the aging process, reduce scarring, help eliminate wrinkle, control acne, as well as prevent cancer. Read why sunscreen should be added to everyone's beauty routine.
