Love to look great but hate shopping? You're not alone. Urged on by the back-to-school nip in the air, many women feel they need something new. Especially if last year's "old standbys" feel like this year's "only if everything else is at the dry cleaner." Fortunately, it is possible to update your closet without overhauling your wardrobe, making a dent in your finances, or getting crazy about it-just follow these four steps.
Go through your clothes and discard anything you know you won't wear again. It can be tough to part with old favorites, but your rule of thumb should be if you didn't wear it last year, you're not going to wear it this year.
Donate your discards to a charity such as Dress for Success (www.dressforsuccess.org), The Salvation Army, or a local house of worship. Or, to earn some extra cash for your shopping spree, sell your clothes to a consignment shop or secondhand clothing store.
Look at what's left and notice what's missing. What do you usually wear to work? Make a list of what you need to shop for-blouses, sweaters, slacks, skirts, dresses, shoes-and set a budget.
Check out the new fall fashions by looking at magazines, seeing what friends and coworkers are wearing, and, of course, visiting us here at www.alight.com. Keep an eye toward what would flatter your shape and coloring.
Think basic and neutral when you're shopping. Choose a palette that flatters your coloring-brown, gray, navy, tan, khaki, red-and build on that so you can mix and match. Then personalize your look with some cool accessories-a big flower pinned at the shoulder, a luxurious wrap, or a great handbag.

Doesn't it seem like we were just hauling summer clothes out of storage and burrowing for our bathing suits? What happened? Summer faded faster than a fashion fad. Now with winter setting in, it's time to switch Capri's for cardigans and prepare our wardrobes for winter. But before you simply dump your best summer clothes in storage boxes and break out your winter wardrobe, plan ahead. An extra 30 minutes now could protect your clothes year round.
