Baking Powder or Baking Soda

Do cakes need to have both or at least one or the other to cook right? I guess I don't even know what each ingredient does and how important they are to recipes.

Both of them help to make baked goods rise. Basically they are both leavening agents. If a recipe call for one or both be sure to put them in.
