This interesting palm tree is a native of Mexico and has worked its way through many homes as design details to decor filling many corners of living spaces in varieties of home. Other names for the Pony Tail Palm Tree include, Nolina reurvata, and the Elephant Foot palm. Pony Tail Palms are a great addition in any greenhouse adding a bit of texture to the environment and a sense of difference to the owner, often the Pony Tail Palm is considered a prize possession for successful growers.
With a thick stem like trunk the Pony Tail Palm has many light green colored, thin palm like leaves that spring out of the top of the tree. After many years of growth the top of the Pony Tail Palm with grow additional 'tops' where additional 'springs' of thin leaves will grow from. A Pony Tail Palm with two or three 'tops' where the leaves are growing from is a great site for gardeners.
This plant with its large stem like trunk is able to store up to a years supply of water in the base of its trunk which is why it has been considered a great addition to the home where the owner might forget to water it as often as should be. This is a very hard to kill plant that is also tolerant to a dry environment and a drier air.
The Pony Tail Palm will thrive in high light situations and you will notice if your plant is not getting enough light it will turn brown on the ends as it tries to conserve energy that it does not get from the light. You can place this plant directly in the window, in a corner that gets direct light from a window, or in the greenhouse where light is widely available.
If you want to propagate or start new pony tail plants, you will find that the Pony Tail Palm will only offer one new offset growth per year so starting new plants from off sets may be a little more difficult than you first thought.
You will notice that they plant will produce seeds in the center of the leaves and when you want to start new Pony Tail Palms from seeds, allowing these seeds to dry out on the plant before removing them will ensure a better success rate.
The Pony Tail Palm can grow up to twenty feet tall where you obviously at one time or another may have to move your tree outdoors for best continued survival rates.
You will know that it is time to water the Pony Tail Palm when the soil is very dry. Watering the Pony Tail Palm just once a month is a plan that will satisfy the plant as it does store so much water in the truck of the plant, allow the soil to fully dry out before watering again.
