I just became aware of pole apples and wondered how easy they are to grow and if they are worth it. I would like to have information about them from someone who has experience growing this type of apple or at least has tasted them.
I am just beginning the process of putting in a backyard and I have purchased two varieties of pole apples, It is my understanding that only the second year or older plants will blossom and accept pollination. You need two different varieties to cross pollinate. They are not self pollinators like the Japanese apple trees. I self pollinated my apple tree this year by getting branches from the nursery I purchased it from. I did buy a second tree but it is young and the blossoms will not come until next year. I have heard the fruit is very good and I am looking forward to the harvest this fall. They are great on space and the older of the two has about 30 blooms on it so even if we harvest only half I consider that to be a great success. They are also supposed to be less prone to get diseases. Hope this helps, I will try and post after I actually have some success to report...have a great weekend, smiles, Kim
