Maybe my memories are deceiving me but I seem to remember being able to smell my mother's roses much more so than I can from my own rose garden. I have no idea what kind of roses my mother had, is there some varieties that have a stronger rose smell than others? Or have my memories gotten away from me?
You can find lots of rose varieties that still have that strong wonderful rose smell. I have found that the rose hybrids tend to have a more muted rose smell. But the tradeoff is some of the different hybird rose varieties have truly beautiful blossoms.
You may want to try planting a variety of types to get the best of both worlds in your rose garden.

Roses have a wonderful fragrance and are the ultimate flower when it comes to romance. Roses are also easy to grow although for many years they were thought of as being a plant that required extra TLC. I have many roses throughout my garden, many colors and sizes too add to my gardens. For the best production, I have found that my roses need their individual space. They do not do well competing with other plants for room. Find a level space that drains well and preferably offers a southern exposure where the morning sun and afternoon shade reach.
