My radishes aren't producing

My radishes are way past harvesting time but when you pull them up there are only very long roots. They get plenty of sun and water but this summer has been very hot in Kentucky. Where are my pretty round red radishes?

I am not sure I understand the root is the part of the radish that you eat.
