Pinching back petunias

When I try to deadhead petunias, I never know if I should be taking off just the dead flower, or pinching off the stem part that it grew on. Could somebody please tell me what to do? Thank you.

Many people make the same mistake when deadheading petunias, simply pulling off the spent flower petals. This is a simple mistake to make, since they come off so easily. To prevent petunias from getting leggy, the entire seed pod needs to be removed, which means that when you deadhead, you need to pinch off the green part that the petals were growing from, as well as the petals. This will result in a bushier plant loaded with blooms.
