Advice on keeping pinks (dianthus) healthy and disease free.

Flowers (Guest) Said,

When it comes to pinks (dianthus) you will want to keep them well spaced and in a well ventilated area, especially if you live in a humid climate.

This will keep them healthy and less susceptible to rust and other leaf diseases. If your pinks get this you will start to notice spots on the leaves.

Do not mulch either, you want to give the stems some breathing space and keep air around them.

If you follow those guidelines you shouldn't have any problems growing pinks in your flower garden.

Bill (Guest) Said,

Bill has an excellent question about pinks that deserves it's own topic: http://www.jorbins.com/gardening-magazine/flower-gardens/tp-1653.html

You can find pinks in both perennials and annuals. You will also find varieties called biennials. There are a lot of biennials that I like but I have found that the second years blooms are not near as good so I consider this type of pinks as annuals and replant them each year.

As I mentioned earlier I love Cheddar Pink, Doris, and Frosty Fire. But I have also been impressed with China Pink, Lilac Pink, Loveliness, Sand Pink, and of course Sweet William.

You will have lots of fun choosing the type of dianthus to grow in your garden. Just take note if they are annuals or perennials when you pick them out. When doing your planting you may want to group all your perennials together to make it easier next year.

Either way you choose you want to know which ones will be back next year and which will need replanted.

Pinks, also called dianthus, usually bloom for a couple of months in colors such as pink, red, white, and yellow. Carnations are a member of dianthus too.

Again this is an everblooming plant that loves the sun, you can only get away with light shade if you live in a really hot climate.

Pinks are especially great to use in rock gardens because even when they are not blooming the look good since they are evergreen.

To ensure continuing blooms you need to be sure and deadhead them. I use a trimmer to do mine and I usually have blooms well into fall.

Be sure and not mulch your pinks, you want to make sure their stems have plenty of air.

It is hard to choose my favorite varieties of dianthus but I would have to say they are Cheddar Pink, Doris, and Frosty Fire.
