As we step forward into a new age of home decor, we are noticing more and more that pieces of old are gracing our nests with their timeless presence. Creators of fine home furnishings and accents are going the extra mile to give an heirloom appearance to new pieces. I remember a time, not so long ago, that a hall table of your grandmother's that was nicked, scratched, and faded belonged in the garage along with other odds and end pieces of childhood memories. But today, that same look can cost you thousands to buy new! The "distressed" look is becoming more and more popular in the design world. "Shabby Elegance" brings a look of character into your home. Mixing worn antiques and collectibles with newer mod pieces is becoming a fast growing trend. A room brimming with pieces of heirloom furniture, heavy wrought iron fixtures and bright and unique textured accent pieces is a room that feels like home! Who wants to come home to things that feel like they can't be touched? As the wheel of time turns, more and more people are realizing that they hardly ever are able to spend any peaceful time at home. When that opportunity arises, they need to feel comfort even more so than style. In this article I will touch on some room to room decorating ideas to add some comfort to your peaceful little haven.
So you're more of a modern kind of person? Try something bold. How about a big overstuffed red leather couch paired with a worn wooden trunk for a coffee table. Add a huge abstract painting and an antique oriental rug in shades of black, gold and deep brick. Choose your accent pieces carefully! Try an amber glass mosaic bowl and a couple of mismatched wooden vases in different heights and colors. Add a tall antique-look wrought iron floor lamp with a fabric shade. You've just created a look all your own that is worthy of any magazine photo!
The key is to experiment. Use what you like and throw out the idea of "what goes together". Don't be afraid to mix colors and textures. Use collections or hobbies to make excellent displays of who you are and what your home says about you. Find objects that have many uses, such as, that antique jewelry box your mother gave you as a child can be a wonderful storage unit for pens, pencils, etc. on your desktop! Set it right next to your great collection of paperweights! Do you collect play programs? Restaurant menus? Maps? Frame them in a weathered wooden frame and display them on your wall. It will make a wonderful addition to your home as well as make a great conversation piece for company. No need to tuck your memories away in a box somewhere. advertisement:
