Granite Countertop Installation

Jo (Guest) Said,

We are planning our kitchen remodel and think we are going to go with granite countertops, do we need to figure on putting a plywood sub counter down first?

Brad (Guest) Said,

I would definitely recommend a plywood subcounter. It will make it much easier for you to level your granite countertops and make it stronger. Could really help support any appliances like a built in dishwasher.

BL (Guest) Said,

You also want to keep in mind what kind of cabinets you are going to use, some will need the subcounter in order to fit. We went with some frameless cabinets and that is what we did in order to make them fit.

Jo (Guest) Said,

Thanks for the tips, we haven't decided for sure on the cabinets yet but I think you have convinced me that for ease of installing the countertops and strength we should have a sub counter under the granite anyway.

Any advice on how thick it should be?

Brad (Guest) Said,

Your plywood counter should be 3/4 inches. That is pretty standard for countertops whether they are granite countertops or not.

Tad (Guest) Said,

We had to use the sub counter in order to make our retractable cutting board work - neede the clearance. We may not have put the subcounter in otherwise but I am grateful we did. I helped a friend install his granite countertops without it and it was much harder work without it. Never again.

Sally (Guest) Said,

I bought a house with granite countertops and I absolutely love them. My question is do I have to seal them periodically and if so how. I don't want to ruin or damage them in any way.

amazed (Guest) Said,

I was doing some research looking at granite countertops and you have to love all the colors that are available. They are just awesome and I am planning my dream kitchen now and it will definitely have some great looking countertops.

Maybe I am missing something but to me these would not be a wise remodeling choice, especially in the kitchen. They stain easy and require so much care that I would think it would be a bad decision. Can anyone fill me in on why it is a good choice for the kitchen?

Just thought I would share this with everyone, most people probably say duh, of course it is easier to do the backsplash after it is installed. But in case anyone is trying to remodel their kitchen on their own without much experience I thought I would share this.

I hate the expense but I am thinking it probably is worth every penny to have corian counters in my kitchen. I haven't yet found another solid surface that impresses me as much. Any thoughts?

Does anyone have any opinions on if I am going to be sorry I didn't go to the extra expense in my kitchen and just do solid concrete instead of concrete countertop tiles?
