Recessed Downlights May Not Be A Good Lighting Choice For Kitchens Due To Water Vapor

Disgruntled homeowner (Guest) Said,

Apparently there is potential problems when you have limited ventilation (like I do because of the cathedral ceiling)and recessed lighting.
What happened to me is the moisture went up through the ceiling lights and condensed on some sheathing so now I have mildew in my attic!! GRRR, just wanted to give anyone the heads up to be careful with recessed lighting in the kitchen.

Oh, and this is why it also seemed so cold in the kitchen, the heat went up through it too!!

Jason (Guest) Said,

Wow, that really sucks.

I have recessed lighting but just a regular old kitchen ceiling, but I think I may head up to the attic to make sure everything is okay. Thanks for the tip, you may have just saved some homeowners from a lot of expense later.

Kathryn (Guest) Said,

I just read your post and wondered if it is only in kitchens that the moisture can be a problem with recessed lighting and cathedral ceilings?

Jason (Guest) Said,

Kathryn,

I think you are okay in other rooms, they don't have the potential moisture problems like kitchens can have. You could always take a look just in case though.

Cal (Guest) Said,

Thank you disgruntled homeowner!

We are in the process of finishing up the plans for our new home and I mentioned what you had said to the guy building our home.

He agreed with you that it can sometimes be a problem!! We are revising our ideas on how we want to light up our kitchen now. Really appreciate you mentioning it.

I need second opinions here. I have picked out a set of 3 pendant lights to put over the breakfast bar and I found a larger one that is more bowl shaped that I would like above my kitchen island. Do I need to design wise go with the same ones in both places? My husband thinks they should be the same.
