Instead of putting in new kitchen cabinets I want to try to just reface them, anyone got any hints for me to do it easier. I am pretty handy but have never done anything like this before.
The biggest mistake people make when refacing or repainting their kitchen cabinets is not taking the time to get the dust off!! The veneer won't stick if you don't and the paint looks like crap. Get some tack clothes and clean off the dust until you think it is gone and then clean your cabinets again.
Then start you cabinet refacing or painting.
Dimensional veneer is much harder to work with i would go with the peel and stick kind unless you have someone helping you that has experience refacing kitchen cabinets with it.
Oh and obviously you start at the middle with your roller to get the air bubbles out. But what I wanted to come back and say is that when you are doing your refacing it is easier to use a little bit bigger of a roller. You are less likely to leave line indentions.
Good luck, don't forget to put some trim on them when you are done. makes the whole thing look more professional!
Get an edge band iron to do your cabinet edges, or else your wife may yell at you for ruining hers!
Oh and always go with the grain when you are using your smoothing blade.
