We were on our way to Mount Rushmore and decided to stop by and see the Crazy Horse Monument.
While it is far from complete you can see Crazy Horse's head clearly. We all found it very interesting the history of the monument and one families quest for it to be completed.
I learned a lot about the Native American history of the badlands that I was not even aware of too.
I hope to go back and see it completed one day.
Yeah I have been to the crazy horse monument myself. I brought home a few pieces of stone they were giving away at the visitor center.
I remember visiting there when I was a kid and all they had done was a bit of the face and the upper part of the arm. Going back there 5 years ago and boy did they get pretty far! It is really something to see and return to as they keep making progress. Sometimes that is better than just viewing a finished monument. Just for this fact I would recommend taking your kids now and later in their life they can also return as they too will be a witness to history in the making.
Hey, I was thinking. Is the Crazy Horse Monument still being funded only by donations and profits from their visitor center?
To answer Harold, The Crazy Horse Memorial is still being funded only by private donations. The Ziolkowskis have turned down millions in federal funding in the name of private enterprise. The planned university and medical school are both desperately needed for American Indians in that area. The family underestimates the amount of money it takes to build and run such facilities. It is impossible to build a medical school without federal funds. Until they agree to work with the government, little progress can be made.
I visited the monument last summer. There are wonderful plans in place, but I was left feeling disapointed in how incomplete the monument is after sixty years.
