1. Budget! Number one on the list is not sticking you your budget. This will cause you a lot of stress if you start going over your budget and you won't have enough money to go around. Don't forget that while this is a special day it is the start of your new life together and you don't want to start out in the hole or to be regretting how much money you just spent. When setting up your budget figure in a little more than you think for each item that way you have a little bit of cushion for the unexpected. Keep in mind if you spend your maximum on each item there will be no wiggle room if anything goes wrong.
2. Buying a wedding dress you haven't tried on. It is sooooo tempting to hit the buy now button when you are looking at wedding dresses online, but you never know how it will look or fit until you try it on. But if you find that perfect dress online take the time to read the return policy before you purchase. Also alterations are common on wedding dresses and you may pay more to have it altered than you would if you have the alterations done where you buy the dress. An added tip here is to not buy a dress till you have tried on several, that way you know that you picked the perfect one.
3. Not hiring a professional photographer. The pictures of your wedding will mean more to you as the years go by, and as time goes on they may become cherished memories of people that have passed on. Take the time and expense to find a good photographer than has experience and references. Also make lists of all the different group pictures you want and appoint someone to double check to make sure that all the important photos are taken with all the right people in them. Another good idea is to add an extra 1/2 hour into the picture taking part of your schedule, you will have to round up various people for the various groups and this takes longer than you think.
4. Don't try to do it all yourself, you will go nuts and drive everyone else around you crazy. Be sure and get others involved to make your planning more manageable and be sure to include your other half in the decision making. A tip though, don't ask their opinion if you are not going to consider it. Don't forget to pick one person to help oversee the special day and to make sure everything runs smoothly so you aren't worrying about everything. It is a good idea to pick someone who is not a part of the wedding party so they have the time to make sure everything is done as you want.
5. Give yourself enough time to get it all put together. It takes time to plan a wedding and if you are rushed everything won't be as you dreamed it. Set up the venue, florist, photographer, caterer, etc. well in advance so you are not scrambling at the last minute.
6. Keep it all in perspective, be flexible, and keep your senses of humor. don't get so engrossed in your wedding plans that you don't take time to enjoy life. Things will go wrong, things will be forgotten, and mistakes will happen, but don't let them ruin your big day. Don't become a BRIDEZILLA or everyone will wish you would just elope!
