Is it wrong to ask your bridesmaids to pay for their own dresses?

I just got engaged and we are starting to think about planning the wedding. Looking at the budget right now. I have been in two wedding one I bought my dress in the other the bride bought the attendants dresses. Is it wrong to ask them to buy them, and if not how do you go about asking? Anyone have any experience in this?
You've known them for years... you got chicken pox together... you kissed a boy first... she got her driver's license first... ah the memories. So why do you want to make her wear a dress that makes her look like she's been attacked by a giant cotton-candy? You don't... but how to find a bridesmaid dress that looks good on everyone from your size 2 friend to your size 42 friend? And how do you pick a color that looks good on your red-head friend and your Asian friend?
Quick: look in the back of your closet. How many old bridesmaids dresses are bunched into the corner that you wore when you were in a friend's wedding, but have never even looked at again?
